Born in Chiba Prefecture, Maki Ishiwata graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute
with a BFA. In her nearly 25 years in the United States, she pursued painting, printing
making and collage to express her creative vision. After returning to Japan in 2007, the
artist began exploring the potential of washi inspired by her mother—an expert of the
traditional paper. Ishiwata’s washi “plant figures” uses an original paper string and
ligature technique, which has become her signature style.
